For the Kids

I like this speaker, I don’t  agree with everything he says, but the way he says it is appealing.  His friendly, joking attitude makes me want to agree with him.   Health problems are our number 1 concern.  Even auto accidents was a drop in the bucket compared to any one of those diseases he mentioned.  Most of which can be prevented with a healthy diet.  However he goes from saying that to saying meat causes these problems.   Yes, there is a connection between eating meat and developing heart disease or obesity, but all animal products don’t have to be cut out of our diet.

One part of his speech that I found was particularly misleading was when he said vegetarian children get higher scores on IQ tests.  He’s implying eating meat has a negative effect on growth and development.  His statistic comes right after he says mercury in fish and animal proteins can damage the brain.  But he doesn’t realize that a correlation isn’t the same as a cause and effect relationship.  For example, I highly doubt children would make the choice to me vegetarians, because kids usually eat whatever tastes the best.  I would say that most children who are vegetarians were raised that way (though I do know of a middle school student who is vegetarian, when no one else in his family is).  I believe that the type of parent who doesn’t let their kid eat meat is also the type of parent who doesn’t like TV.  A parent who is that concerned about a child’s diet is also going to be concerned about their education, and actually help them.  Misleading statements about food can come from any source, not just the food industry.

  1. everything is good to a certain extent. past that point, everything can be bad. meat is good. it tastes good. it gives our bodies nutrients and such. but it can cause obesity. water is also good. you need it to survive. but, too much water can lead to water poisoning which you can die from. Arsenic is also good. it gets rid of rats, but it can also get rid of you :)

  2. I totally agree with you his argument is strong as he tries to bring in humor but I dont agree with all his claims there totally exaggerated. I think that everything to an extreme can be harmful but that does not mean we just stop consuming different types of food and just eat vegetable. No! What we should do is consume everything in adequate amounts because different foods bring and contain a variety of different nutrients that can benefit our over all health. Also it is impossible to just get all necessary nutrients out of vegetables.

  3. As an animal science major I have to say this guy is off his rocker. yea, h agod speaker, but meats, beef, chicken pork, ect, all carry the 9 essential amino acids that ours bodies need. No vegetable can do this. So therefore to be a vegaterian one must be highly skilled nutritionist in order to get all the nesscessary requirements te body needs. Again he has a point that there are healtier alternatives to a big mac, and that excercise is better than watching tv, but every once in a while a bigmac just tastes good. I totall disagree with him using the God created vs satan created view at the end. It is not a sin to eat a big mac. God created the world, not satan, and for him to try to pursuade people by using biblical references just makes me mad because thats not the way thing work. haha nikko… “Arsenic is also good. it gets rid of rats, but it can also get rid of you” thats funny.

  4. Meat isn’t the problem. Yes having too much meat can be…but there is nothing wrong with meat since it provides our body with some of the essentials nutriants that it needs. Everything is ok in moderation. Just make sure to eat your veggies too!

  5. I think meat is needed in a healthy, daily diet of foods consumed on an everyday basis. It provides the body with protein and nutrients and our body needs that! I highly doubt that children who eat meat are not as smart as children who are vegetarians. I am going to need some hard evidence in order for me to believe that!
